About Goalball Scoreboard
The Vision
Goalball Scoreboard was created to bridge the gap in coverage for goalball, a unique Paralympic sport. This platform provides real-time updates on schedules, scores, and standings for goalball tournaments worldwide, catering to fans who cannot attend in person but wish to stay informed about their favorite teams and players.
About the Founder
John Mulhern, a former USA Paralympic goalball athlete and six-time National Champion, founded Goalball Scoreboard. Competing in the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Paralympic Games, John realized the need for a dedicated platform to provide comprehensive information about goalball. Leveraging his expertise in web development and accessibility, John created Goalball Scoreboard to enhance the visibility of the sport.
Platform Development
Launched in 2008, Goalball Scoreboard quickly became a trusted source for goalball enthusiasts. The platform not only provides real-time scores and standings but also offers resources for finding goalball-related websites, social media channels, and local teams. By including official rules from the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA), Goalball Scoreboard ensures that fans have access to accurate and reliable information.
Expanding Coverage
Initially focused on domestic tournaments in the United States, Goalball Scoreboard has expanded to cover international events, including regional competitions, world championships, and the Paralympic Games. The platform's mission is clear: to deliver comprehensive coverage of all goalball tournaments.
Mobile App and Future Innovations
Building on the success of the website, Goalball Scoreboard launched an iOS app in 2011 and an Android version in 2018, ensuring accessibility across devices. Currently, John is developing a React Native app, streamlining the experience with a unified codebase. Although the app is still accessible only via browser, future updates will enhance its functionality and user experience.
About Goalball
The Sport
Goalball is a dynamic Paralympic sport designed for athletes with visual impairments. Teams of three players compete on a court, aiming to score goals by rolling a ball with embedded bells into the opponent's net. All players wear eyeshades to ensure a level playing field, relying on sound and touch to defend their goal. Goalball is a game of strategy, teamwork, and resilience, embodying the spirit of inclusivity in Paralympic sports.
