About Goalball Scoreboard

About the Creator

Goalball Scoreboard is the brainchild of John Mulhern, a distinguished former USA Paralympic goalball athlete. John proudly represented the USA in the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Paralympic Games, securing his status as a six-time National Champion in the years 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2009, and 2010. Faced with the challenge of limited coverage, schedules, scores, and standings for goalball in the late 90s and early 2000s, John Mulhern turned to web development and accessibility. His mission was to bring the world of goalball into the digital age, providing users with unparalleled access and information.

Goalball Scoreboard's Inception

Born in 2008, Goalball Scoreboard was meticulously crafted to emerge as a reliable source for goalball schedules, scores, and standings. The platform addresses the challenges faced by goalball enthusiasts in accessing comprehensive information about the sport. It goes beyond scores, extending support through goalball-related web resources that aid in discovering websites, social media channels, and potentially local teams. The inclusion of official rules from the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) website underscores Goalball Scoreboard's commitment to authenticity and completeness.

User-Centric Design

Designed with the end-user in mind, Goalball Scoreboard caters to fans who may not physically attend tournaments but are eager to stay updated on their favorite teams and players. The platform provides real-time scores, standings, and final results, ensuring a complete journey from the tournament's commencement to its conclusion. Initially tailored for domestic tournaments within the United States, Goalball Scoreboard has expanded its coverage to include various international events, spanning invitational tournaments, regional competitions, world championships, and the esteemed Paralympic Games. The vision is clear: comprehensive coverage for ALL goalball tournaments.

Mobile App Evolution

Following the success of the website, Goalball Scoreboard ventured into the mobile application arena in 2011. The launch of an iOS app for iPhone marked the initial foray, followed by the development of an Android version in 2018, catering to the diverse user base. With a commitment to accessibility, Goalball Scoreboard retained its mobile responsiveness while enhancing user experience across platforms. Presently, John Mulhern is actively developing a React Native app, streamlining the process with a unified codebase. Although currently accessible only through a browser, Goalball Scoreboard continues to evolve.

About the Sport - Goalball

Goalball is a unique and thrilling Paralympic sport specifically designed for athletes with visual impairments. Played by teams of three, participants wear eyeshades to ensure equal visual conditions. The objective is to roll a ball with bells embedded into the opponent's goal, defended by players who use their bodies to block the ball. Goalball not only showcases exceptional athleticism but also fosters teamwork, concentration, and determination. It has become a symbol of resilience and inclusivity in the world of Paralympic sports.
